Wildlife Profile

Davidson's Arnhemland Safaris will show you a wildlife smorgasbord of birds, animals and reptiles. The picture on the right shows a Sea Eagle returning to its nest, just one of the more than 200 species of birds that inhabit the area, making it a birdwatcher's paradise. On the nearby billabongs you will see the colourful Jacana (or Jesus-bird) walking on the lily pads searching for insects. And a pair of Brolgas performing their mating dance is a sight you will never forget. Binoculars and a camera with plenty of film are essential items for your visit.

Sea Eagle returning to its nest - Arnhemland

Leichhardt's Grasshopper - Arnhemland A profusion of exotic insects, butterflies and moths inhabit the rainforests and paperbark swamps, food for frogs, pythons and birds. Mount Borradaile hosts a large wild boar population and you will see many of these creatures during your stay. Large saltwater crocodiles up to 17 feet in length frequent the local waterways, along with the smaller and less dangerous freshwater (Johnston) crocodile. To ensure that guests don't become part of the local food chain, swimming in billabongs is strictly prohibited. There are totally safe alternatives handy in the higher rocky outcrops.
Wallabies, dingos, goannas, tree snakes, turtles and frill-necked lizards are just some of the wildlife that you may encounter as you are guided through your day's activities. In earlier years massive water buffalo roamed the region until they were culled to prevent their destructive effect on the environment. Diverse ecosystems rich in flora and fauna ensure that you will experience a wildlife appreciation adventure that is both unique and educative. Davidson's Arnhemland Safaris offers you the opportunity to visit one of the most remote and restricted areas of Australia, in a pristine wilderness setting that encompasses an all-pervading presence of the past.
